Wednesday at The National Drive

It has been a brilliant, sunny day here at the Kentucky Horse Park.  Lots of people got their safety inspections taken care of and were off and driving.  Paul Maye gave a demonstration of the Achenbach style of driving and used two home-made rein boards to demonstrate and he invited people to give it a try as he explained the technique and why it is something that every driver should learn and become comfortable with.

Next, Dana Bright explained how a Working Pleasure Driving class works and about 12 drivers drove for the spectators.  Ring classes are an artificial means for a judge to determine how pleasureable a horse or pony would be to drive when driving in the country.  She explained what various gaits, working trot, slow trot and strong trot meant and how a class would be conducted.  All the turnouts were very well-behaved and non looked as if this was their first time in a show ring.

There is every range of driving animal here, from a coach pulled by Friesians and driven by Marilyn MacFarlane to a pair of donkeys driven by Johnny Ruhl.IMG_7194
